20 Things This Mother Will Probably Never Tell Her Son, Actually

Last night, after a lovely and heartwarming evening at an annual fundraiser for my place of employment, I settled in with a cup of tea and my laptop to wind down before bed. Several friends had shared a list entitled "20 Things A Mother Should Tell Her Son." I thought to myself, "I am a mother! And I am going to have a son! I should read this!" I took a sip of tea as I clicked and prepared for even more loveliness and heart warmth to round out my night, but found my heart filled with...something other than warmth.

To be honest, I was so troubled by the first item on the list that I almost didn't continue reading. I read the first item to my husband to sort of check my own reaction, as I have been known to overreact on occasion, and he was equally appalled. I soldiered on through the list and continued to find most of it awful, for a variety of reasons.

Here's the list, originally from Werdyab, along with my commentary.

*snark alert*

20 Things a Mother Should Tell Her Son

1.   You will set the tone for the sexual relationship, so don't take something away from her that you can't give back.

Um. No. Just no. I'm not even going to touch the hetero-normative language of assuming that my son's sexual partners will be people who use the pronoun "her". Possessing a penis does not give you the automatic power to set the tone for the sexual relationship. One person is not in charge. One person does not set the tone. You do nothing to or with a partner without their explicit consent. Consent means saying yes. It is not merely the absence of saying no. Get consent. Your partner also needs your consent. Consent and respect go both ways. Sex is a partnership. If you don't take what isn't expressly given to you, you won't have to worry about being able to give it back.

2.   Play a sport. It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage your time and stay out of trouble. And maybe even throw or catch.

There are many worthwhile activities in addition to sports that teach these things. If you enjoy a sport, then play a sport. If you enjoy music, then sing or play an instrument. If you enjoy art, then draw or paint or sculpt. If you enjoy theater, then act. If you enjoy dancing, then strap on some ballet or tap shoes. Do something you love. Finish what you start. Learn grace, honor, and respect in all that you do. Learn to respect authority, but not blindly. Learn also when it is appropriate to question authority, and learn to recognize and do something about gross abuses of authority.

3.   Use careful aim when you pee. Somebody's got to clean that up, you know.

Um. You. You are the somebody who has to clean that up, you know. There are not magical pee cleaning fairies. If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie, wipe the seatie.

4.   Save money when you're young because you're going to need it some day.

This is the first useful item on the list thus far, though I imagine there are more profound lessons in saving than "you'll need it someday."

5.   Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom. Now please go use them.

Because the magic fairies only clean up your bodily fluids, apparently.

6.   Pray and be a spiritual leader.

If that's authentic for you. Live your truth. Speak your truth. Don't be afraid to fight for what you believe in. If that involves prayer and spiritual leadership, cool. If it doesn't, also cool.

7.   Don't ever be a bully and don't ever start a fight, but if some idiot clocks you, please defend yourself.

Defend yourself if you are in danger. If an idiot clocks you, and you are able to walk away, walk away. If it seems like an idiot is thinking about clocking you, walk away. If you determine that someone is an idiot, WALK AWAY.

8.   Your knowledge and education is something that nobody can take away from you.

I sincerely hope your knowledge and education include the proper usage of are vs. is.

9.   Treat women kindly. Forever is a long time to live alone and it's even longer to live with somebody who hates your guts.

Treat everyone kindly, because it is right, not because there is something in it for you. Do not spend more than a few minutes with somebody who hates your guts.

10.  Take pride in your appearance.

There is far more to life than what you look like. Find your style and rock it. Be clean. Wash your clothing, body, and hair on a regular basis.

11.  Be strong and tender at the same time.

Oh hey, I might actually say this to my son. And my daughter.

12.  A woman can do everything that you can do. This includes her having a successful career and you changing diapers at 3 A.M. Mutual respect is the key to a good relationship.

This is not exactly true. It is more accurate to say that the things that men can do and the things that women can do are equally valuable. Since you will grow up with two parents with fulfilling careers and two parents who meet your needs both night and day, you should have no reason to think that either of these are associated with gender.

13.  "Yes ma'am" and "yes sir" still go a long way.

Address people as they'd like to be addressed. Calling me "ma'am" will go a long way to me giving you a dirty look and telling you not to call me "ma'am."

14.  The reason that they're called "private parts" is because they're "private". Please do not scratch them in public.

If you've got to scratch, you've got to scratch, but try to either find a secluded corner or be discreet. Learn how to satisfy an itch by "jingling your keys in your pocket."

15.  Peer pressure is a scary thing. Be a good leader and others will follow.

Non sequiturs are scary things. I like cake.

16.  Bringing her flowers for no reason is always a good idea.

If her is your mother, this is true. If she is allergic to flowers, or you are creepy stalking her, or any other number of scenarios; not such a good idea. Also, there are plenty of hims who might like being brought flowers for no reason.

17.  Be patriotic.

Do not be blindly patriotic. Be as critical of your country and government as you are appreciative of them. Fight for what is right. What is "patriotic" is not always right.

18.  Potty humor isn't the only thing that's humorous.

But it is hilarious in the right company, and when well-timed.

19.  Please choose your spouse wisely. My daughter-in-law will be the gatekeeper for me spending time with you and my grandchildren.

Please choose whether or not to get married wisely. Do not choose a partner (again with the hetero-normative language, ugh) who appoints him or herself the gatekeeper of your time. A person who attempts to control your access to your family (or theirs to you) is an abusive person. If I am disrespectful to your partner or overstep my role as a grandparent, should you have children, and I refuse to see the errors of my ways, by all means, restrict my time with them; I deserve it.

20.  Remember to call your mother because I might be missing you.

This one stands.

If you're left wondering what I would tell my son (and daughter), check out 25 Lessons for my Children.

Three

Dear Delilah,

It is hard to believe that a week has already passed since your third birthday. It is harder yet to believe that three years have passed since your birth! I never could have anticipated how much my life could change in three years, or how much it was possible for me to love and cherish another human being.

Delilah Jean-3 Years Old

Relaxing with her Guitalele
In three years, you have grown into such an independent little individual. You seem to have inherited the love of music that your father and I share. Our growing collection of musical instruments tends to get much more use than many of your toys. You sing yourself to sleep at night, you wake up singing, and you make up songs that narrate your day. Recently, you even legitimately harmonized with your father!

In addition to your musical endeavors, you love being outdoors, reading, animals, and art. One of your favorite books is your book of animals, which you insist on looking through at least once a day. You can identify and name every animal in the book, complete with the sounds they make. You also like to spend some time each day with your art supplies; coloring with crayons or markers, painting, or using chalk, and have recently discovered the joy of clay.

You are fascinated by the weather and love looking out our big living room window and describing (often in song!) the type of day we're having. Last week we got a light dusting of snow, and you were disappointed that it wasn't enough to make a snowman. The week before that we had a thunderstorm after you'd gone to bed, and you woke up and called me into your room to inform me that it was raining and you needed an umbrella!

Sharing the Birthday Spotlight with Nate
The night before your birthday, we attended a birthday/housewarming/welcome home party for a friend. He was gracious enough to share his birthday spotlight with you. I was nervous that you'd get scared by the sheer number of people singing and paying attention to you, but you were so mesmerized by the candles and fascinated by the moment that it didn't even phase you.

Birthday Pancake
Your birthday kicked off with what has become your traditional birthday pancake. After breakfast, you opened your gifts, a Guitalele (a classical guitar/ukulele hybrid that is just your size), an art easel, and a stuffed owl I made for you. After gifts, it was time to start preparing for your party!

Owl Cake!
With your love owls, we went with a bit of an owl theme for your birthday party. I made my first attempt at anything other than a round or square cake and tried my hand at this cute owl cake. Mine didn't turn out quite that pretty, but I was still very proud of it, and am disappointed that all I managed to capture of it was a quick shot with my phone! You were feeling a bit run down as your party got going, but despite not feeling your best and being a bit overwhelmed by the large crowd of people, you hung in there and enjoyed your cake and all of the lovely gifts from your generous guests.

It was wonderful to celebrate you, your birth, and all of the joy and adventure you have brought into our lives. The year ahead has a lot in store for us, as we grow into a family of four and you ease into your new role as a big sister. No matter the ups and downs, I am so thankful that we're together for the ride!

Love,

Mama

Giveaway: Mama, Talk About Our New Baby From Baby-Love Books — $15.99 ARV {12.1; Worldwide}

This is a joint giveaway with Fine and Fair and Natural Parents Network. You may enter at one site only. Please find the section marked "Win it!" for the mandatory entry and optional bonus entries.
Baby-love Books is offering our readers a giveaway of Mama, Talk About Our New Baby, a value of $15.99.
Mama, Talk About Our New Baby
From Baby-love Books: “Mama, Talk About Our New Baby is the story of a young boy who, with the help of his mother, learns what life will be like after his sister is born. Imaginative and detailed illustrations guide parents and children alike through a variety of gentle and responsive parenting themes such as breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and baby wearing. Mama, Talk About Our New Baby provides children with a beautiful and unique introduction to the attached family and helps prepare young readers for life with a new sibling.” From our reviewer, Joella at Fine and Fair:

reading book Mama, Talk About Our New Baby is a children’s book that helps children learn what to expect when a new baby arrives. This attachment parenting-friendly book includes themes such as breastfeeding, babywearing, and cosleeping. This professional-quality book has a hard cover and is twenty beautifully illustrated pages in length. Baby-love books is the team of author Toni Olson and illustrator S. Marie Carlson. Toni Olson is a work-at-home mother of two who had two natural home births and is passionate about empowered birth and the benefits of breastfeeding. S. Marie Carslon combines her love of art with her love of pregnancy and birth. Mama, Talk About Our New Baby is their second creation, following their collaboration on Mama, Talk About When Max Was Born, a book that helps children prepare for water birth at home, and one which was previously given a rave review on Natural Parents Network.

As a mother expecting her second child, I have been disappointed by the “mainstream” books meant to help prepare older children for the arrival of their younger siblings. Several friends have given our daughter “big sister” books, and I found that they failed to reflect our style of parenting. In some of the books, the baby was never pictured being held by anyone, but was always in a stroller, crib, or bouncy seat. The books exclusively depicted bottle feeding with no mention of nursing and no images of babies at the breast. That babies slept in cribs in a nursery was stated as a matter of fact. I found myself explaining to my daughter as we looked at these books that we don’t do things quite like that, and having to make adjustments to nearly every page. It was as confusing to her as it was frustrating to me!

Enter: Mama, Talk About Our New Baby! This book, written by a work-at-home mother of two, is a breath of fresh air for a naturally minded attached parent. It depicts a family much like our own. The baby is carried and worn in carriers by both mother and father. Throughout the book, the baby is shown at mother’s breast, helping to normalize nursing and serve as a reminder to older children who are past weaning. Since this book arrived, my 3-year-old daughter has started nursing her dolls and stuffed animals again! There are images and explanations of a family bed, and the baby’s needs are swiftly and gently met throughout the book. There wasn’t a single aspect of this book that didn’t resonate with our family or that required confusing contradictions or explanations on my part.

spread of illustration from book The colorful and beautifully done illustrations in this book are perfectly detailed without being too busy. In the weeks since this book has been added to our library, my daughter has spent hours exploring, describing, and asking questions about the drawings on each page. The family depicted in this book is multi-racial, and several races are represented throughout the pages in various outings. Mothers and fathers are both shown as involved and loving parents. This book is appropriate for and easily understood by children in a wide range of ages. While many of the books we’ve received have seemed over my toddler’s head or too wordy to keep her attention, the text on the pages of Mama, Talk About Our New Baby is brief enough, and the illustrations interesting enough, to keep her captivated and even ask me to read it again.

Mama, Talk About Our New Baby is the perfect book for preparing children in attached families for the birth of a new sibling. The thought and creativity that went into every word and illustration is evident. This book is so well done that I can’t muster a single complaint about it! Even my midwife was so impressed with it (and the Talk About Max book) that she wants to add them to her own library. For attached parents who are feeling frustrated with the lack of representation of their parenting styles in books to prepare older siblings for a new baby, this book will be a refreshing and comforting find.

BUY IT!

You can purchase your own copy of Mama, Talk About Our New Baby at baby-love books. This book is available for $15.99 plus applicable shipping charges. A Letter to my Son: The First of Many

Dear Canon,

Canon Patrick's first photo
I have done the virtual equivalent of pulling out a piece of paper, jotting down a few words, and crumpling it up and throwing it away at least a dozen times to try get this, my first letter to you, out onto paper (or the screen, as it were). I started to write to you when I first felt you moving in my womb, long before I knew what your name would be. I tried another time after a moment of intense bonding with you that hit me like a load of bricks (but a warm, pleasant, overwhelmingly full of love load of bricks). Then again after our ultrasound and finding out I was having a son.

A son.

Our son.

My son.

When I was pregnant with your sister, your father asked me if I’d be upset if it was a boy. It was no secret that I had always wanted a daughter; I’d had her named picked out since I was a teenager, and as a proud and outspoken feminist, I was compelled to bring a girl into the world and teach her to take it by storm and show it that girls and women are powerful and strong and equal and human. And so it took me a minute to answer his question, although I had been giving it some thought. The conclusion I came to was that, while I desperately wanted a daughter, I knew that a man as amazing as your father is would help me to raise an equally amazing son, and I knew how blessed this world would be to have another man even remotely like your father in it. I was compelled to bring a boy into the world and teach him to take it by storm and show it that boys and men are sensitive and compassionate and nurturing and human.

And now here you are, growing inside of me, and I am overcome with anticipation of the joys and challenges of raising a son in this complicated and confusing world. See, I have an intimate understanding of what it’s like to be a girl growing up in this world, and what it means to be a woman in this world, but the experience of growing from a boy into a man is foreign to me. While my lack of this type of experience allows some fear and uncertainty to creep in, I am filled with gratitude for the man who will be my partner in raising you into someone who we hope will embrace our values and learn to treat everyone he encounters with compassion and respect. I trust that together, we will love and nurture you, guide and teach you, celebrate and appreciate you, with all that we have. Together, all four of us, you, your sister, your father, and I will continue to blaze this trail, to learn, and grow, and laugh together.

Our family of four...pumpkins!
As we navigate the path of raising you, alongside your sister, there will be stumbles and falls. In the few short years I've been a parent already, I have learned that even with the best of intentions, I will make mistakes, and that those mistakes themselves offer opportunities to both teach and learn. They provide opportunities to apologize and to seek forgiveness, and to fall and get back up.

Canon's first costume. :)
In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy these last few months of my pregnancy with you. I will marvel at the strength of your movements and the bizarre ways my belly moves along with you. I will nourish you and myself as I do my best to prepare to give you a gentle entry into this world and this family. I will look forward to you joining us and making us a family of four. My love for you will continue to grow, although it already feels big enough to make my heart burst. I already love you more than you know, my dear son.

Love,

Mama
